Without a good role model in life, a lot of children tend to get into trouble, whether it be smoking, doing drugs, or development up to become a well known convict. The days of influence starts early, and with no loving parents or a mentor, kids tush easily become sidetracked and misguided. It is for this reason that it is important for children to switch a positive influence in their life to help them manipulate the right choices and have a successful life. Candy behind portrays an adolescent child, Jessie, who is being misled down the course of maturity. Jessie represents an image of the children and what they rear end become when they are without positive control in their lives.
At first glance, Candy Cigarette is a very simplistic photograph. The picture was taken in 1989 by Sally Mann, who is considered a somewhat controversial photographer because of the countless nudes she shot of her children. The total persistentness and white photo portrays her seven-year old daughter Jessie with a cigarette in hand, posing as she feels appropriate, with attitude and solitude. Her tousled pig and ruffled dress give away the fact that she is junior than what she wants to portray in her attitude. When looking closer, however, it becomes a triple portrait. On the left, you see a tall figure in the background, which is Jessies brother on stilts.



On the right stands her little sister, exerting hard attitude with her hands on her hips. Jessie is the only person set about the camera, and is the only one in clear focus, making the peach automatically drawn to that part of the picture.
The picture is in bare and white with good reason, because otherwise Jessies facial expression would not be quite as intense, and the photograph itself would have less emotion. The shadows are just right, contouring her body and separating her clearly from the dark background.
