A Doll House: The Superior Status Of Men

For a very long time, male dominance has had an incessant negative impact on our society. Women were subject to the male sanction and were considered as their possessions. It was imperative that the man have total work over his marriage and family. Only recently, men have stepped knock d take in from their platform and women were entitled to their own human rights. In the routine A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen, men controvert their superiority to their partners by controlling their actions, destroying their self-esteem, and refusing them the right to have their own opinions.

First, the controlling behaviour of Torvald influences his child-like and “carefree” (56) wife, Nora, to do as he requirements. They are a young married couple with one-third small children who, on the surface, seem to be living the hone fairytale life. However, reality hits when Torvald reveals his manipulative attitude and forbids Nora to eat macaroons. This exposes their poor partnership and Torvald’s superficial view of woman. Torvald knows that Nora is a “captivatingly lovely young woman” (100) and he would not need to change a thing about her. The reason he prohibits the sweet is to avoid Nora from gaining weight and thus changing her tangible appearance. This demonstrates his shallow attitude.



For Nora though, the macaroons symbolize a form of rebellion, a screen place, from Torvald. Once in awhile Nora must lie of her whereabouts in order to obtain her desired freedom and most importantly and escape from Torvald scolding her. If Torvald would discover that his wife was refusing his orders, all his “ mannish pride” (54) would diminish and it would be “painfully humiliating for him” (54) to endure. Also, as a wife, Nora must never be heard from eject when spoken to, or when asked to entertain Torvald. She is obliged to amuse Torvald by “dancing and dressing up and reciting for him” (55).
